"This summer camp is very great! Traditional Chinese Medicine is amazing!" Andre from Portugal told us excitedly. For Andre and other 40 foreign students, this summer is definitely special. As the TCM and Chinese Culture Base for college students in Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University (ZCMU) launched this year's summer camp after full preparation with the theme of "Experiencing Chinese Culture and TCM". Meeting with Chinese Culture The wonderful journey started with traditional food in China. "Jiaozi", AKA "Chinese Dumplings", took our students to a whole new world of delicious food. While making and eating dumplings, they also learned the origin and history of "Jiaozi". A special Hangzhou style noodle "Pianerchuan" gave students a different eating experience. Beautiful dress is always on the top of girls' shopping list. Cheongsams definitely brought the elegance to our lovely girls. Peking Opera, paper cutting, learning to play Guzheng are also on the schedule. Meeting with TCM Traditional Chinese Medicine is usually regarded as a mystery by foreigners. However, the camp told them TCM is much more than mystery. Damaris from Romania got her knee injured before she came to China. When she first arrived, it was very difficult for to walk, not to mention walking the stairs. After she took a lecture on Acupuncture and Moxibustion, she decided to give it a try on her knee. After one treatment on the knee the pain was greatly released. She exclaimed: "It's amazing!" Andre said: "When I was 13 years old I saw in a book a picture of a man with a lot of needles on his body. I was a little bit shocked and it was my impression about TCM. In my college, there is no TCM related courses available. So I came here to see what TCM really is. The lectures helped a lot. The Yin-Yang Theory, Five Elements Theory, Acupuncture and Moxibustion and Tuina just opened a whole new medical world to me. I think TCM should not be on the opposite of Western Medicine. They should be combined so people in the world can receive better treatment." Students also learned and experienced Guasha, cupping therapy and learned to play Taichi and Chinese Martial Art. “I wish I could stay longer.” "I wish I could stay longer because there is so much to see. Herbal facial mask, five-animal boxing, Chinese opera… I just wish I could have one more even a year to stay here to experience all these wonderful cultures. I hope I can come again next year." Mariana from Portugal said to us on the closing ceremony. The end of this year's summer camp cannot be just an end. It is a brand new start for us all. ZCMU is always here waiting for you.
