Master of Foreign Language and Literature

    As one of the first programs in Zhejiang Province, the MA program in Foreign Linguistics and Literature first enrolled students in 1998. At present, the College has   two Directions of research --- Foreign Linguistics and Literature, and Translation and Interpreting (MTI), with a total of 54 supervisors, of which 9 are full professors, 38 associate professors, 28 doctorate degree holders, most of which have international experience of research or teaching. Under the three areas of academic focus, i.e.  Foreign Language Teacher Education, Studies of Cross-cultural Pragmatics, Foreign Language Learning Theories and Practice, the supervisors are divided into five specialties, namely: Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, English Literature, English Pedagogy and Teacher Development, Japanese Language and Literature, Translation and Interpreting (MTI).

    The program is tailored for international students majoring, preferably, in languages/ linguistics and literature.

    The program is directed by Dr. / Prof. Hong Ming, Dean of College of Foreign Languages, Zhejiang Normal University. Professor and Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics.Vice chair of Zhejiang Association of Foreign Language and Literatures. Director of Provincial Key Discipline “Foreign Language and Literature” of Zhejiang Normal University.Primary academic interest is in research on contrastive studies on English and Chinese, textual coherence analysis and evaluation, and teaching English as a foreign language. More than 20 Articles have been published on journals, including “Equivalence of metafunctions in English to Chinese translation”, “The function of ‘Topic’ in achieving textual coherence”, “Application of the centering theory in measuring coherence of students’ English essays”,“On developmental features of university English majors’ ability in achieving local coherence in English writing: a parametric study based on centering theory” and so on. Books published include one entitled Master the Teaching Techniques, which was translated from English into Chinese and published in Zhejiang University Press in 2006, and one entitled Application of the Centering Theory in English Writing Evaluation, which was written and published in Fudan University Press in 2011.Projects undertaken and completed include 2 granted by the Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Science of Zhejiang Province and the Ministry of Education and 1 granted by the National Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Science, and some others granted by the Education Department of Zhejiang provincial government.
