Introduction of physics discipline

The physics discipline which is one of the three oldest disciplines in ZJNU was established in 1956. Up to the year of 2013, it has two Key Laboratory of Zhejiang Province: "Research on optical information detection and display technology" and "Solid state photoelectric device"; three Key Disciplines of Zhejiang Province: "Theoretical Physics", "Condensed Matter Physics" and "Optical Engineering"; LED Chip R&D Center research institutions of ZJNU; Key Demonstration Center of Zhejiang Province in Physics Experiment Teaching; three undergraduate disciplines: "Physics (national characteristic specialty)", "Optical Information Science and Technology" and "Materials Physics". There are totally 48 postgraduate tutors, including 1 Members of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 winner of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 32 professors. More than 70% of them have Ph. D.

The academic influence and academic quality of the physics discipline is well acknowledged by  international peers. The ESI (Essential Science Indicators) shows our discipline is in the global top 1%. In recent years, we won 3 Zhejiang province science and technology awards; published more than one hundred papers in international academic journals such as Physical Review Letters, Nano Letters, Physical Review Series, Applied Physics Letters, Optics Letters; conducted more than 60 National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC) projects with accumulated funding exceeding 20 million.  The facilities of physics discipline worth more than 50 million, including LED chip integrated system of research and development process、femtosecond laser、laser direct writing system、high performance computer set、transmission electron microscope、scanning electron microscope、plasma chemical vapor deposition system、raman spectrometer、lithography machine、step thickness gauge、the beam etching machine、electron beam deposition apparatus、steady-state transient fluorescence spectrometer、magnetron sputtering equipment、polycrystalline silicon smelting furnace、minority carrier lifetime measurement、laser scribing machine and so on. The area of laboratories is over 2000 square meters with 400 square meters' thousand grade ultra-clean room.

The first level physics discipline has five second level master station: Theoretical Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Optics, Acoustics and Functional Materials Physics and Devices. It has educated more than 400 graduate students since 2000. On the one hand, we focus on training students' solid foundation of professional knowledge and open active thinking. So that they will be able to publish their own works on international journals. As well as lay a foundation for their advanced studies at universities or research institutes. On the other hand, we also focus on practical applied ability, which help students to work in high-tech enterprises in the future. In recent five years, the graduate students in physics discipline published 40 papers, conducted 20 projects of Provincial Science and technology department research plan with funding exceed 200 thousand.  More than 50 students took part in international academic exchange. After finishing their master's degree, some of students pursue their Ph.D. in either domestic or international institutes, some of them chose to work in Schools, while others work for a enterprise engaged in product research and development.
