Zhejiang is located on the eastern coast of China, in the transition zone between Eurasia and the Northwest Pacific, which is a typical subtropical monsoon climate zone. With a total area of 101,800 square kilometers and an undulating terrain, Zhejiang is covered by mountainous areas in the southwest and northwest, hills and basins in the center and southeast and low plains in the northeast. In the province's mainland area, mountains and hills account for 70.4%, plains account for 23.2%, and rivers and lakes account for 6.4%. Zhejiang has a coastline of 2253.7 kilometers, a total of 2,161 islands along the coast, and a shallow sea shelf of 222,700 square kilometers. Affected by the East Asian monsoon, the prevailing wind changes its direction significantly in winter and summer, and the precipitation changes obviously from season to season. As Zhejiang is located in the coastal transition zone of middle and low latitudes, together with an undulating terrain and the dual influence of the westerly belt and easterly belt weather systems, various meteorological disasters frequently occur here, making it one of the most severely affected areas in China with typhoons, heavy rains, droughts, cold waves, strong winds, hails, tornados and other disasters. The general features of Zhejiang’s climate are: significant season winds, four distinct seasons, moderate annual temperature, plentiful sunlight, abundant rainfall, humid air, synchronized rain and hot seasons, diverse climate resources, and frequent meteorological disasters. The annual average temperature of Zhejiang is 15-18℃, the extreme maximum temperature is 33-43℃, and the extreme minimum temperature is -2.2 to -17.4℃. The province’s annual average rainfall is 980-2000 mm, and the annual average sunshine hours vary from 1,710 to 2,100 hours. |
